What Causes Headache, Sore Neck And Chills?

Husband has had flu-like symptoms for the past week - aches, general fatigue, headache and sore neck, occassional chills. Had been to doctor 3 days ago. Told him it was a virus. Today he woke up with red blotches on his body - arms, back, stomach. Possible causes?
