What Causes Headache While Having Knot On The Back Of Head?

I have noticed a large knot on the back right side of my head about an inch or two from my ear. If I apply pressure to certain areas of my neck and shoulders it will make the knot hurt. Sometimes it hurts on it's own and I have also noticed that I get headaches which are not common for me. What could this be?
