What Causes Hearing Loss, Itching And Pain In Ear?

I've been having ear pain lately, loss of hearing on one side of the ear and and my ears feel compact and itchy. I had my med school friend look at it thru an otoscope and he said my eardrum was all white in color (which is not normal) with very little wax.
