What Causes Heart Palpitations?

Im 48 years old and for the past several days I have been having either an irregular heart beat or my heart is skipping a beat. There is no pain or discomfort at all. Burping and releasing air seems to help. Sometimes it feels like I may pass out but then it goes away. This happens a few times a day.
