What Causes Heart Palpitations?

My son is stating that he is concerned because his heart seems to pound. His resting heart rate is 100. He is obese but is 28, normal cholesterol and had a clean EKG a year ago. He is lying down trying to sleep and his heart will beat and then he says it seems to almost skip a beat and then pound very hard. I say he is ok. Thanks
