What Causes Heart Palpitations?

Sometimes my heart feels like its beating extremely hard and I can feel it in my whole chest, making it a little difficult to breathe. It can be very uncomfortable and sometimes interferes with what I am doing. I usually just ignore it, but I was wondering if that s normal, and if not, what it could be.
