What Causes Heavy And Dark Colored Bleeding While On Iud?

I have an iud, since the placement I have had almost no bleeding but when I did it was watery and in small amountss. I have recently started bleeding heavly and dark (about the same as my 'normal' periods befor the iud). I have only had the iud for 3 years....whats goin on with my body?
