What Causes Heavy Bleeding And Abdominal Pain?

I was fitted with the mirena coil in march 2010. in the past 3 weeks i have been bleeding on and off very heavily. i have been feeling unwell with a temp and general flu like symptoms. in the last 36 hours i have had sharp abdominal pain and the bleeding has worsened. could i have an infection?
