What Causes Heavy Menstrual Bleeding With Blood Clot?

I was light on my period and it lasted for a day then had nothing for two weeks then all of a sudden after having sex my period came again though it was exteamly heavy and streaming down my legs at least 1/3 of a Pint of blood followed by a massive blood clot.. what does this mean? Should I visit my doctor?
