What Causes Heavy Menstrual Periods While On Contraceptive Pills?

i m currently on the pill and ran two months together due to exams and didnt want to be on while i was sitting them but have come on my period heavily for the past 3 days and seems as if i m on my period even though i ve been taking my pill? Not sure why this has happened?
