What Causes Heavy Menstruation Along With Abdominal Cramps?

I have the mirena and have always had heavy periods since my first child. This last week I started with really bad cramps and then light bleeding the next day, to heavy bleeding for 2 days, to very light red watery blood. Is this common or could there be something going on?
