What Causes Heavy Vaginal Bleeding Along With Stomach Cramps?

I was six days late on my very regular 28 day cycle. I had sex this morning with my husband, it was slightly painful at first and then fine. A few hours later I had severe cramps and a large amount of bright red blood flow. I took 4 pregnancy tests earlier this week and all were negative. Is this just a late period? Thanks for your help!
