What Causes High Body Temperature Along With Painful Eyes In Children?

we put our son (6) to bed, he felt quite hot. Kept an eye on him. 2 hrs later he was laughing hard into his pillow with eyes open but not acknowledging us, then he told his dad to get that shirt away from him it was hurting his eyes. He was laughing in the night as well. Felt very hot. We got a fan and he had only a sheet on. He seemed fine in morning and went to school. What was happening?
