What Causes Inflamed Bump In Pubic Area?

I have a small pimple-like bump in my pubic area. It is pea-sized, slightly larger than a pimple and is rather painful to the touch. Upon trying to pop, it felt somewhat harder and inflamed, and did not seem able to pop. What is this, and can I apply heat to try and bring it to a point where it can be popped?
