What Causes Inflammation And Swelling In Finger Joint?

I have a very inflamed finger joint, it is red, swollen, hot and I am unable to move it. The doctor took blood, he said everything looked normal. He said try to wait it out but if I was in too much pain he would refer me for a shot. What should I do?
