What Causes Intermenstrual Spotting?

Hi i started my period on the 8th of september and yesterday the 22nd i notice tht there was a bit of blood there on my knickers and when i went to the toilet they was a little bit when i wiped my self but has the day went on it had gone. Please could you tell me what this mean and also i havent been using protection.
