What Causes Intermittent Bruises On Hand While Having Hand Contusion?

My husband was in a car accident 2 weeks ago he hurt his hand and was seen in the ER then he went to a specialist they labeled it as a contusion of the hand. It is still swollen and he keeps getting bruises that appear and disappear and come back is that normal?
