What Causes Intermittent Pain In Chest?

My 8 year old swallowed a piece of hard candy ( butterscotch ). He coughed a little bit, then got it down with some water. Now he says his chest hurts for a few minutes, then it goes away, comes back. Should I take him to his doctor or wait to see if it makes it way to his stomach? He hasn t complained in a few minutes.
