What Causes Intermittent Pain In Left Side Of Chest?

I have needle like pain in the left side of my chest. On and off for the couple of months. When it comes it can last 5 min to a several hours. The pain is beneath my skin in my chest and at times I could feel it in my back. As if someone put a needle right through the inside of my chest to my back. It hurts.
