What Causes Intermittent Spotting And Heavy Bleeding During Periods?

I came on my period on Tuesday morning, it was just very light spotting. The next morning i woke and i had bled quite heavily during the night, however that day it went back to spotting. The same happened last night where it went heavy and again back to spotting today. This has never happened before so unsure what to do
