What Causes Irregular Bowel Movements With On And Off Constipation?

My 23 year old daughter has consistently been experiencing irregular bowel movements, feeling somewhat constipated on an on-going basis. She exercises a lot and eats very healthy so we're not sure of what it could be. She eats a salad every day and also has been drinking more milk- could either of these food items be causing it?
