What Causes Irregular Breathing Patterns?

Hi my husband has a weird breathing pattern lately while sleeping. ..when he breathes in its normal stomach rises but when exhaling as his stomach goes down it has a jeering motion like the feeling of hikups...I'm not sure what that would be can you help?Amber
