What Causes Irregular Menstrual Cycle?

I came off the contraception pill in October and since then have had slightly irregular periods - never later than 5 days. I am currently 17 days late, I have stupidly been having unprotected sex but took a pregnancy text yesterday which came up negative. Is it possible that the test was incorrect or is it normal for periods to be irregular?
