What Causes Irregular Menstrual Periods?

had a light period approximately 4 days. have had light pink discharge tonight, 2 days after period stopped. also have tender breasts. im 42 and we are trying to conceive. i dont normally get spotting. one month my period is light the next its heavy. could it be pregnancy or hormonal?
