What Causes Irregular Periods While On Birth Control Pills?

I am on birth control and experience very irregular periods ranging from one every 2- 5 months. This morning I experienced a gush of blood (while still on the pill) (not the iron supplement week) and thought I had gotten my period but have not experienced any blood throughout the rest of the day. what does this mean?
