What Causes Irregular Periods?

Hie. Its been almost 3 months n I didnt get my periods, doctor suggested me to take primoult n for 5 days, 2/ day. I did get them but the flow is very little or its sometimes there and sometimes not. And also I did diet for a year or so before this issue. Could you please tell me what could be the reason and what can be done?
