What Causes Irregular Periods?

Hi, I haven't had a period in about six months and have had examinations from the doctor but they can't find anything wrong. I'm also experiencing intense period pains which I am having to have constant medication to control. Whilst reading a women's health article, I have remembered that during my last period I used a tampon and I was wondering if that could have anything to do with this. Hope you can help.
