What Causes Irregular Vaginal Bleeding While On Microgynon?

I have been on microgynon for 5 years with no irregularities. I take the pill at the same time every day however this month i have noticed spotting 1 week before i am due my period. It has become heavier, then stopped and has now started again, just a couple of days before i am due on. What could be causing this?
