What Causes Irritation In Vagina?

i have had an irritation in my vaginal area. i have just got off my period. i have a brownish creamy discharge. my mom said it could be because ive been using tampons now. but the day after i got off my period there was no discharge. on that last day i went to switch tampons when i noticed some irritaion(itchy feeling) if i contiune to itch it gets itchier. if i just stop it seems to stop. what can i do? and can it go away on its own?
