What Causes Itching And Peeling Skin Around My Thumb Post Paronychia Infection?

i have been diagnosed with a paronychia infection along thumb nail bed...very tender and painful. It was surgically drained in emergency room and I was given clindomycin (300mg 4X daily for 10 days). After 3 weeks much of the soreness has been relieved, but now the skin is peeling badly (several layers) and there is a terrible itch. The peeling area seems to be widening??? It looks as if something is eating away at the skin where the paronychia was.
