What Causes Itching Of Moles?

I have a upraised mole on the side of my neck, it has been there as long as I can remember however I think I caught it the other day and since it has become very itchy and looks to be coming off (albeit very slowly). I wanted to ask if this is anything to worry about or simply that occasionally a mole will come off!
