What Causes Itchy Lump With White Centre On The Side Of Small Toe?

My son has been playing hockey all weekend. He has developed a raised area on the side of his small toe. It is only slightly red and has only what looks like a tiny white dot in the middle. Pressure from anything touching the area hurts him. It is very itchy. Thank you so much!
