What Causes Itchy Rash On The Abdomen?

I have a rash on my abdomen. It seems to be spreading. When I first started scratching it, it formed some scabs, it is very dry, but lotion doesn't help. I put hydrocortisone ointment on it for a while but it seems worse. My pharmacist thinks it is staph. Thoughts?
