What Causes Knee Pain?

I have been having moderate to severe knee pain on the inside of my knee after I twisted my knee. At the time of injury there was no poping noise nor did it swell but it was too painful to place weight on the knee while it was bent. So my question is does a popping noise and swelling occur with all ACL injures?
