What Causes Knot On The Side Of Head After Having Head Injury?

my son fell and hit his head while ice skating on the wall very hard...should i be concerned? he has a small knot on the side of his head and has a headache now...I put ice on it when he got home and gave him 2 aleve. Should I bring him to ER for X rays ?.....he is 14 years old.
