What Causes Knots On Head And Swollen Lymph Node Behind The Ear?

I have a couple knots on the back of my head and a couple on the front near my hairline. They are very tender to the touch. What are they? I also noticed that my lymph node behind my left ear is swollen but don t know if it has anything to do with the knots?
