What Causes Left-sided Flank Pain?

For several months I have been having Left sided flank pain. All tests are negative though a CT scan showed a disc herniation. However the pain is intermittent, and ascends and descends and then goes away. My position doesn t affect it. I have no parasthesias or numbness, and no tenderness. So that diagnosis doesn t make sense to me. Any ideas?
