What Causes Light Bleeding During Menstruation While On Birth Control?

I am taking birth control, and have been for many years. My periods are very short, and usually I have heavy bleeding for the first 2 days. Im currently on day 2 of my period and all I've had is a little thick, brown blood. This is not normal for me.
