What Causes Light Vaginal Bleeding Before Menstruation?

I am experiencing a very light period 1 1/2 weeks before my period is due. I sometimes have periods that are 1-2 weeks late, but never early. I am not on any form of birth control as I had a tubal ligation almost 4 years ago. Is this something I should see a doctor about?
