What Causes Loss Of Taste And Smell?

About 10 months ago I had an acute respitory infection. This turned to pneumonia. I have been left with loss of taste and smell and very heavy sweating when moving around. My doctor says I have a low grade fever during these sweating bouts. My GP left the practice and my new GP told me to go home and come back when I have symptoms he can see. My family now think that I must be imagining these symptoms. can you giv e me any advice. I am in Australia.
