What Causes Low Potassium And Sodium Levels After Recovering From Diarrhea?

A little boy...10 years old...had a severe bout of Diahrreha. In hospital for IV...discharged and now back with low Potassium and sodium. On IV. Pondering if there could be a cause beyond residual effects of the Diahrreha. Family not getting much info.
