What Causes Lump On The Palm Of Hand?

My 16 yr old daughter recently found a small lump on palm of left hand just below middle finger. It is approximately 2cm round and the same in height and also similar colour to that of a vein. It is sore to touch and remains more sore after it being poked and prodded , otherwise it is not very painful.
