What Causes Missing Periods And On And Off Brown Spotting?

Hello I just had a question about my friend nahtalie. She hasn't had a period in about 2 months but is having brown spotting on and off and doesn't know what's going on. She took a pregnancy test a few weeks ago it came back negative and she doesn't recall having sex. What's going on?
