What Causes Missing String Of IUD?

I got my IUD inserted in April 2010. I recently checked to see if it was still in because I have been having some weird feeling in my uterus. I can't find the string. Could my Dr. have cut the string too low or could it be push further up if I use tampons? Could it have fallen out? Please help!
