What Causes Mucus Discharge From Anus?

My 7 year old has had a mucus discharge from his anus off and on for the last 3 days. I spoke with a triage nurse and she said it is most likely a virus and should resolve on about5 days. When he has this there is no other fecal matter just mucus. He has no pain, no fever and is acting normal.
