What Causes Multiple Periods In A Month?

i'm a 49 year old female experiencing odd symptoms with my menstrual cycle....usually it comes at the end or the very beginning of the month...this month it has come three times and now the blood doesn't flow like usual....i'm not sure if it's part of premenopause or if it could be something else
