What Causes Nails To Stop Growing?

I ve noticed my nails have suddenly stopped growing. What could be some causes? I recently started a relationship with a man who s an auto mechanic by profession. He works in the shop( which is near my house ) with two dogs. As soon as I started petting the dogs on a regular basis, my nails, which were previously long and healthy, started breaking off and not growing. What do you think?
