What Causes Nausea With Oblique Pain?

My wife has been having heavy nausea for the past week and recently is getting a pain in her right side near her oblique. She just took a pregnancy test that came back negative. What should we be looking for in terms of symptoms for something other than pregnancy? What could she have?
