What Causes Numbness On Left Side?

I have had numbness down my left side now for the past 2 weeks. It started with alot of pain when I got up one morning and I have been left with this numbness. I have been referred to an Orthapaedic department but my appointment is not for another 4 weeks. Am I OK to last another 4 weeks with this numbness? The numbness goes from the saddle area to the heel of my foot down the outside of my leg.
