What Causes Occasional Croaky Voice With Dry Throat At Night?

Sometimes when I talk or especially when I try to sing along with the car radio, I sound like I am gargling or yodeling. A few friends have mentioned that my voice sometimes sounds 'croaky'. This started a few weeks ago when I woke in the middle of the night extremely thirsty - really dry throat.
